WHAT IS HYPNOSIS

Background:

Hypnosis has been contentious for years precisely because no one scientifically validated explanation exists -theories and opinions abound.

The term is ambiguous, and needs contextual definition:

- Hypnosis is a method to induce a deep 'hypnotic' state, and

- Hypnosis is used to name the state one enters (impropper use);

- Stage hypnosis: Entertainment application of a trance state;

- Therapeutic Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy: Therapeutic application of a trance state.

At Garuda we work with Theraputic Hypnosis

Popular definitions:

Hypnosis is an induced state of trance. Generally, that state is induced by one person guiding another person, but it is sometimes achieved alone (Self-Hypnosis). Hypnosis is not sleep, but rather a form of deep relaxation where the senses are still able to supply the subconscious with information, but much more directly - with less scrutinisation, judgement and reasoning from the conscious. In one sense, the state is induced precisely so that one can communicate directly with the unconscious without the conscious mind interfering unhelpfully.

Hypnosis is a deeptrance. This definition relies on the fact that people cannot not be in some state or another at any time. Hypnosis is a method to deliberately go into a state that is of a deep level, inwardly directed, and highly focussed.

"There is no such thing as hypnosis". Some indicate (accurately) that people go into deep states naturally -daydreaming, attentive reading and sleep are some examples. In official hypnosis, such states are entered at will, often with the help of another person.

Official Definitions:

British Medical Association: A temporary condition of altered attention in the subject which may be induced by another person and in which a variety of phenomena may appear spontaneously or in response to verbal or other stimuli. These phenomena include alterations in consciousness and memory, increased susceptibility to suggestion, and the production in the subject of responses and ideas unfamiliar to him in his usual state of mind. [BMA, 'Medical use of Hypnotism', 1955]
